Month 1

Coming home with a newborn, your first newborn at that, is a big adjustment. I was so excited for maternity leave. I just knew I’d have all this time to do everything I couldn’t do because I was normally at work. I thought the weather would be warming up so we could be outside. But then reality set in…

For starters, my body needed time to heal. I had a very easy recovery but I knew that just because I felt good I shouldn’t push it. I needed to take the time to let it fully heal. Also, I really loved spending my days cuddling this cute little newborn. Looking back, I do kit regret one bit the time I took snuggling. Those are days I will never get back and all the laundry, cleaning and chores can wait.

Next, taking care of a new born is like listening to a song on repeat. You feed them, you change their diaper, you get them dressed, you put them to sleep. If you’re lucky, you can shower and get yourself dressed and then they wake up and you repeat the process. At some point you have to eat for yourself, do some laundry and brush your teeth.

On day 3 we got to come home which meant meeting Aunt Brooke, Uncle Ry, Cousin Remington and of course Grandma, who so patiently waited for us to get home.

Uncle Ry and Aunt Brooke picked us up from the hospital. I wasn’t sure if they’d let Ryne in because he didn’t have my designated person wrist band but they said as long as he didn’t have a fever he was good to come in. I wish I had a picture of Ry carrying all my bags out. I came with Krew’s diaper bag, my bag and my work bag and while I was there I gathered 3 more between diapers, blankets, pump stuff, my bathroom bag and general hospital things. the nurse followed us out to make sure I had him buckled in correctly. We went to the pharmacy to get my pain meds and then we headed home.

Grandma and Remington met us at the door. Grandpa still wasn’t sure if he was still sick so he wore a mask anytime he held Krew.

The next few weeks were filled with doctor visits and lots and lots of snuggles. His jaundice levels were a little high so we had several visits to check that. He was a champ when they had to draw his blood. We spent lots of time laying in the window sunshine to soak up all the sun we could to help. We even had to do a few days of just formula because they thought maybe the breast milk was causing some of the jaundice.

About a week after we were home he got to meet his great grand parents. The entire extended family was so patient and gave us the time we needed before coming around. Because of COVID we didn’t rush to invite people in. But we also knew germs were normal and wanted our family to meet him. I didn’t want to prevent anyone from meeting him.

He absolutely loved being outside. Unfortunately the weather didn’t cooperate very good with us while we where on maternity leave. Most days were very cold and very windy. But we definitely took advantage of the good days. Even if it was just laying in our dome, we went outside when we could.
